A Larger View of Stalag XVII B

I've started reading a fantastic book written by Hubert Speckner titled "In der Gewalt des Feindes" ("Under Enemy Control"). It is an incredibly detailed gathering of facts, reports and data about every German WWII POW camp in Austria.

After only reading a portion of this book so far, I have already gained a whole new perspective of the size and scope of Stalag XVII B (by the way - for those purists among us, that's the proper German designation, with a space between the XVII and B, and not a h… Continue

STALAG KREMS diary found in Melbourne, Australia

I have in my possession a diary - which I believe is written in an Eastern European language, dated 1940 - 1948. Although I am unable to read the contents, one entry stands out - 'STALAG KREMS XVII.B'. The entry is in the year 1941. I believe this to be a prisoner of war diary. It appears that the author emigrated to Australia - possibly to Sydney or Melbourne.

Can anyone offer any clues?

PBS's History Detectives series talks about Stalag XVII-B

Thanks to my friend, David Garcia, who told me about this. PBS 's series "History Detectives" recently featured a story about George Silva (31A).

The Eternal Soldier

Another Kriegie, my friend Armand Di Schiavi (Barracks 19B), has just published his memoirs. His new book is entitled "The Eternal Soldier: Old Soldiers Never Die & They Never Fade Away", and published by Xlibris Books (ISBN 978-1-4415-3481-1). The 240-page book is a detailed account of his war experience based on his daily diary entries, and contains lots of photos and drawings. It's a great addition to your Stalag XVII-B library. It's available at… Continue
